How to Write Your Name in Japanese Kanji (and What It Means)

Japanese uses three writing systems. Hiragana and katakana stand for sounds, and kanji are characters that carry meaning. A name from outside Japan, like Emma or Liam, is usually written in katakana: エマ, リアム. That shows how the name sounds, but not what it means.

Kanji go one step further. Each kanji has its own sounds and its own meaning, so you can pick characters that match the sounds of your name and say something about you. This is called ateji (当て字). For example, Emma can be written 恵舞 (e + ma), "a blessed dance", or 叡満, "deep wisdom and fulfillment".

How it works, step by step

  1. Split your name into Japanese sounds. Liam becomes ri-a-mu, Sophia becomes so-fi-a.
  2. For each sound, list kanji that can be read that way.
  3. Choose the combination whose meanings fit together, such as 凛亜夢 for Liam, "a dignified, noble dream".
  4. Check that the kanji look good together and avoid unlucky or awkward meanings.
